The driving force behind VOCAB 5000
About VOCAB 5000
VOCAB 5000 grew out of years of frontline ESOL teaching, watching learners understand a word in isolation yet struggle to use it in a real conversation. The programme was built to close that gap.
The syllabus takes learners on a structured journey through themed topics that mirror real life: family, daily life, work, education, travel and relationships. Rather than teaching vocabulary as an isolated list, every word is encountered again and again in context, through listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Interactive online activities give learners immediate feedback at every step, so progress feels visible and mistakes become part of the learning rather than a source of anxiety. In the classroom, image-based speaking cards turn that same vocabulary into real conversation. A learner turns over a card, points to the picture and says “I'll have a go” before attempting a full sentence, building fluency and confidence one topic at a time.
